Also known as a “cloak pin” and a “blanket pin”, the penannular brooch is an ancient clothing fastener featuring an circular ring with an open segment, allowing a long pin to pass through. By rotating the ring with clothing trapped on the pin, the fastern keeps the articles toghether. As the alternate names suggest, it works well to hold a cloak over the shoulders or a blanket around a sleeper.
All parts made of pure handworked copper. This one has a dark patina with some verdigris — the green or bluish-green coating that forms naturally on copper when air and moisture react with the metal. The word comes from the Old French phrase “vert de Grèce”, meaning "green of Greece". The patina ads a distinctive ancient look and acts as a protective layer.
Ancient examples are especially associated with Viking and Celtic cultures, though they were used throughout most of Iron Age Europe.
This example features a ring of 66mm in diameter and a pin that is 140mm long. Pins of different dimensions can be made upon request.
