Halloween Top Hat Automaton - Finished
A contemporary automaton by Dug North
Here is a shot of the trick top hat for MAKE magazine Halloween special edition nearly completed. The only piece that remains to be attached is
a section of black hat material on the back half to cover the hole. This is the hat in the activated state; I'm
squeezing the brake lever off-screen.
You can see most of the four-bar linkage and the hinge that allows the top of the hat to swing opern.
You also can see the rubber finger puppet. This puppet worked really well for
two reasons. First, it is bright yellow so it shows up well against the black of the hat. Second, this monster has
its little arms raised. When the hat opens, the motion causes the arms to shake around as if the moster was really
trying to scare you.
