Here is the automaton completed, before any finish was applied to the wood.

I considered leaving it just like this. There was something about the directness of the wood that made it seem really unified and old. Ultimately, I decided to stain it as opposed to paint it.

I also tend to prefer some light woodburning for small details. The eyes, parths of the mouth, and other little things are burned into the wood using a soldering iron.

I added small escutcheon pins for the doctor's lab coat buttons
